Moving on TikTok can be a real pain for anyone who has ever suffered from hemorrhoids.
If you want to prevent them, one gastroenterologist insists you’ll need to give the watch app a break when you go number two—no ifs, ands, or uncomfortable backlogs about it.
And his “10-15” rule can be a big help in keeping your bum healthy at potty time.
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and rectum that can lead to pain, itching and bleeding. Although they usually clear up on their own, they can become serious enough to require medical attention and even surgery.
Often, they form due to straining too much while having a bowel movement, but just kicking the can for a long time – like when texting or on social media – can hurt you too.
Enter “TikTok Tush”.
“A common cause is staying on the toilet for a long time,” Dr. David L Schwarzbaum, a gastroenterologist.

Dr. Karen Zaghiyan, a colorectal surgeon in Los Angeles, is even more conservative with her recommendation.
“People spend a lot of time on the toilet,” she said, and “a lot of people make a habit of reading their email or looking at TikTok or Instagram while they’re on the potty.”
